Sperm donor has no parental rights

A court in Australia has ruled that a sperm donor is not entitled to have his name on the birth certificate of the child conceived with his sperm, reports the BBC.

The 58-year-old man had donated his sperm in response to an advert placed by a lesbian couple, and has played an active role in parenting the child.

The couple have since split up, but the mother's ex-partner wanted her name to be on the birth certificate. The judge ruled in her favour, saying that the sperm donor had no parental rights in relation to the child, and that his name must be removed.

The man described the decision as “a very bad day for fathers,” reports the BBC.
