Register General releases vital event data for Scotland

Recent information released by the Register General for Scotland has shown that there has been a 5.9% increase in the number of marriages that were registered in Scotland in the second quarter of 2012. The total figure for the quarter reached 9,155, which is 511 more than the same quarter of 2011, and the highest second quarter figure since 1993.

The figures also revealed that four more civil partnerships were registered in the second quarter of 2012 than in the same quarter last year. In total, there were 138 civil partnerships registered over the three month period, 63 of them male and 75 female.

Registrar General for Scotland, George MacKenzie, said:

“Although Scotland recorded its lowest ever annual total of deaths (53,661) in 2011, there is generally some fluctuation each year and the number of deaths registered for 2012 is expected to be close to the long term downward trend.

“Today’s statistics also show a slight fall in the number of births registered. Nevertheless the figure for the second quarter of 2012 was above the level of the second quarters of the years from 1998 to 2007 inclusive. And the number of marriages in Q2, 2012 rose to the highest level for almost 20 years.”
