Newlyweds Advised to Share Household Chores

Newly married couples are advised to share household chores equally between them if they want to have a happy and long-lasting marriage, according to new research from America.

The study looked at 220 newlywed couples and discovered that how household tasks were shared had an impact on the wife’s marital satisfaction, but didn’t appear to affect the husband’s happiness. Researchers found that where the wife placed a value on chores being equally shared, the marriage was a lot happier if her husband shared her beliefs.

Brian G. Ogolsky, a professor of human development and family studies at the University of Illinois, said that it was important for couples to be upfront with each other about their expectations regarding the division of chores. If they don’t, they risk becoming disillusioned with each other as the marriage progresses.

"Newlyweds need to thoughtfully plan how they can make their expectations about sharing chores work out in real life, especially if the new spouses strongly value gender equality in household labour,” he advised. “This issue will only matter more after children start arriving."
