Myths contribute to lack of adoptive homes in Wales

Harmful myths surrounding adoption are contributing to a significant shortage of adopters in Wales, according to recently released research.

Concerning new statistics, released by The British Association of Adoption and Fostering (BAAF) to coincide with National Adoption Week, show that there are a number of widely held misconceptions surrounding the adoption process.

For example, the study shows one in four Welsh adults (24%) believe that being over the age of 40 would prevent them from being able to adopt a child.  In fact, there is no upper age limit for prospective adopters.

In addition, nearly half of those surveyed (44%) think being unemployed or overweight would discredit them from giving a child a permanent family home. In reality, this is not the case and there are no such restrictions placed on those interested in adopting.

With the number of Welsh children in care rising by 24% over the past five years, experts are concerned that these misunderstandings are preventing hundreds of children across Wales from finding a permanent home.

Wendy Keidan, Director for BAAF Cymru, said:

“Although the number of children placed for adoption in Wales has risen slightly since March 2012, there is still a concerning shortage of adopters in comparison to the number of children waiting for adoptive families.

“The facts are simple; children need security, stability, love and a true sense of belonging in a home environment. We know that these homes can take many different forms. There is no such thing as the “perfect adopter” and we are concerned that people are not coming forward as a result of believing they don’t conform to a non-existent stereotype.”
