The Impact of Divorce on Grandparents

Going through divorce or separation is undoubtedly a stressful and emotional time, and its impact can be felt not only by the immediate family involved but also by wider family members such as grandparents.

In recognition of this, family charity National Family Mediation has produced a guide to help grandparents who have family members going through a divorce or separation.

“Grandparents play an important part in the lives of their grandchildren,” explained Jane Robey, Chief Executive of National Family Mediation. “It’s usually a positive thing if they can stay in touch after there has been a separation or divorce.”

The guide advises grandparents on how they can best support grandchildren whose parents are separating. It also highlights how mediation can help to reduce conflict in divorce situations and can help grandparents re-establish contact with grandchildren if this has been lost.

According to the Grandparents Association, as many as one million children have lost contact with grandparents as a result of their parent’s divorce or separation.
