Parenting website, Netmums, has recently carried out a survey which found there 35 different family types currently in existence in the UK, reports the Scotsman.

The most common type of family structure continues to be the 'nuclear' family, with four out of five children in the UK living with their natural parents.

Around 20% of families surveyed contained unmarried cohabiting couples, and almost 1% of families had children living with gay, bisexual or transgender parents.

Netmums founder Siobhan Freegard said: “The number of family set-ups in the UK is amazing and it looks likely it will continue to rise as people become more accepting of different ways of parenting.”
