'Growing apart' the most common reason for divorce

According to data from Grant Thornton's 2011 Matrimonial Survey, growing apart was the most common reason given by respondents to explain why couples got divorced.

The survey, which has been carried out by the financial and business advisor each year since 2003, found that the top three reasons given by respondents for divorce were growing apart/falling out of love (27%), extra-marital affair (25%) and unreasonable behaviour (17%).

This is the first year in the history of the survey that extra-marital affairs haven't been cited as the most common reason for divorce. Louisa Plumb, Associate Director for Grant Thornton's Forensic and Investigation Services, suggests that one reason for this might be that couples are being increasingly influenced by the number of celebrity couples who are apparently prepared to forgive a partner who has been unfaithful.
