Fees for converting a civil partnership to a marriage are to be waived for same-sex couples currently in a civil-partnership. Culture Secretary, Sajid Javid told parliament that there is to be no fee for couples who entered into a civil partnership when same sex marriage was not permitted.

Mr Javid informed the house that the regulations were to be laid before parliament that day  during question time on 3 July 2014. The waiver will begin on the 10 December this year and is to be in place for one year.

The Scottish Parliament passed legislation allowing same-sex marriages in February 2014, the legislation is now being implemented which will mean that the first same-sex weddings could take place this Autumn.

However, it was decided following a consultation, that heterosexual couples who wish to have their relationships recognised as a civil partnership rather than a marriage will not be granted permission to do so.
