Temporary marriage licenses under consideration

Politicians in Mexico City have put forward proposals which, if implemented, will mean unhappy marriages can come to an end without the need for divorce, reports the Guardian.

The politicians are proposing a change to the city's civil code to allow for the introduction of temporary marriage licenses. These flexible licenses would allow couples to decide in advance on the duration of their marriage, subject to a minimum duration of two years. At the end of the agreed time, the couple could review the state of their marriage. If it was not working out, the marriage contract would simply come to an end without the couple needing to go through a complicated divorce.

According to the Guardian, the proposals are gaining in popularity, and a vote on their introduction is likely to take place before the end of the year.
