Referendum call for same sex marriage proposals

A Christian charity has spoken out against the proposals contained in the Scottish Government's consultation on same sex marriage.

In its submission to the consultation, Solas (Centre for Public Christianity), argues that marriage is not an issue that should be redefined by governments and that to do so is to violate the human rights of those "who have been married under the traditional understanding of marriage".

The submission, written by Gordon Wilson, the former leader of the SNP and chairman of Solas, and David Robertson, the director of Solas and minister of St Peter's Free Church in Dundee, argues that a referendum might be an appropriate way forward.

The Scottish Government launched the consultation on same sex marriage and religious ceremonies for civil partnerships in Scotland in September.

The consultation asks if marriage in Scotland should be open to people of the same sex and through either a civil or religious ceremony, on the basis that a religious ceremony could only take place if the religious body and the religious celebrant were happy to carry it out.
